Equivalency Review Process: Guidelines for UW Departments

THE BASICS

The following instructions pertain to the UW's equivalency review form included with the course description(s) needing review.

  • Please complete the review form after reading the NOTES section and reviewing the course materials.
  • Return completed forms as soon as possible to: Equivalency Review Coordinator, Office of Admissions, Box 355852.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • COLUMN 1: Transfer Course. Includes course prefix and number, and number of credits earned at originating institution. The + symbol denotes a course that is no longer offered, and Column 6 may contain a date, or range of dates, indicating when this course was offered. Courses not currently offered are also evaluated for transfer credit, since they often appear on transcripts.
  • COLUMN 2: Transfer Course Title. As used at the originating institution.
  • COLUMN 3: UW Equivalent Course. Fill in a course equivalency, either a specific course from your department, or departmental XX credit. Please note: A specific numeric equivalent is not always necessary-an assignment of departmental XX credit whenever appropriate is useful and often preferable to a recommendation of UW XX.
  • CREDIT LEVELS:
    • If the two-year school's course earns more credits than the UW equivalent, please do assign the excess credit.
    • If the two-year school's course earns fewer credits than the UW course, credit awarded will be limited to credit actually earned.
  • Course Sequences:
    • For sequences of courses, most common in history, mathematics, and the sciences, please fill in the credit awarded for each individual course in the sequence, as well as credit awarded when all courses in the sequence are taken.
  • COLUMN 4: Other Recommendations. Use this space to recommend UW XX or No-credit equivalencies, or to refer the course to another department. UW XX or No-credit courses are further evaluated according to general UW transfer policies.
  • COLUMN 5: UW Requirements. Indicate the appropriate Area of Knowledge or proficiency requirement(s) that the course meets: VLPA, I&S, NW, [C], and/or [Q].
If you assign departmental XX credit, please fill in a suggested A of K designation. Undergraduate Advising will then review the course for these requirements.
  • COLUMN 6: Effective Date. Generally, effective dates start when a course first appears in a catalog, or when the course is first offered (see Examples D and E, below). Effective-date ranges identify periods of time when the course was offered. If for any reason you think the effective date(s) should be different, please note the change and explain why, under the Departmental Comments section on the review form.
