If your first language is not English and you are not a U.S. citizen, please keep reading to learn more about the UW’s English language proficiency requirement.

The University of Washington requires all undergraduate students whose first language is not English and who are not U.S. citizens to demonstrate English language proficiency. Students may demonstrate proficiency by submitting minimum test scores or by completing mandatory course work through the UW’s Academic English Program (AEP).

For immigrant applicants, proof of English language proficiency is not an admission requirement. However, we strongly recommend that applicants make plans to submit test results early so they will know whether they will be required to take AEP courses upon enrolling at the UW.

For more complete information about the enrollment and graduation requirement, please consult the English Proficiency information sheet.

  • Unlike immigrants, international students have an English language admission requirement and should refer to information provided for international students.
