Annual Student Budget for 2009-2010

The Office of Student Financial Aid estimates the amount of money that students need to meet living expenses and to pay for school. The figures below list the student budget for the 2009-2010 academic year. The budget is updated each year in early summer once the University has set the new tuition rates for that upcoming year.

For details about UW tuition rates, consult the Tuition Rates page.

Tuition and Fees

Figures presented here are for full-time enrollment, i.e., 10-18 credits per quarter; for all undergraduate fields of study. International students studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa are required to register for at least 12 credits in order to maintain full-time status as defined by U.S. immigration law.

Tuition is due each quarter by the third week of the new quarter.

Room and Board

The amount listed for Room & Board includes food, utilities, and housing. It is higher than the figure of $7,800 charged by Housing & Food Services (based on double-room occupancy and the gold-level dining allowance) because it includes the cost of meals not covered in the campus dining plan.

For students living on campus, room and board is paid quarterly. The first payment, approximately $2,600, is due on September 1 for autumn quarter.

Health Insurance

Washington State Law (WAC 478-160-260) requires that all international students have adequate health insurance. All registered international students, regardless of visa type, are required to purchase the UW student health insurance.
