1. Does the UW offer scholarships or financial aid for international students?
No, we do not have any financial aid or scholarships available for international students. The University of Washington is a publicly funded institution, so financial aid is available only to U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. U.S. immigration laws require international applicants provide proof of financial support before the university can formally offer admission to a student and issue appropriate immigration documents.
2. Can international students work while they are in the U.S.?
U.S. Immigration law allows international students to work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) on-campus while they are enrolled as a full-time student. Students are also allowed to work full-time during summer vacation and between quarters provided you continue as a student the following quarter. Off-campus employment must be authorized through specific procedures outlined in the federal regulations. Contact the International Services Office for more details on off-campus employment opportunities.
3. I have a scholarship from my home government or some other sponsored agency. What do I do next?
If you will be attending the University with the support of a scholarship from your government or some other agency, you must present a copy of the scholarship letter to the Scholarship Office after you have confirmed enrollment with the University. Go to Government or Private Sponsored Students for additional information.
The Office of Special Services administers many merit-based scholarships for freshmen, including the UW Undergraduate Scholar Award for Washington residents, the UW Achievement scholarship for nonresidents, and National Merit Scholarships.
4. How and when do I pay tuition?
Once an applicant has been offered admission and is registered for courses at the University, he or she will receive periodic email messages with reminders to check the tuition statement on the MyUW account to see if there is an outstanding balance. The email notification sent to the student is the official tuition bill. Students may authorize online access to their statements by two additional people. Fees must be paid in full by Friday of the third week of the quarter.
