What is an Official Transcript
To be official, credentials must be original documents, or photocopies stamped as certified-true copies by school officials at the institution attended, or by other educational authorities. Notarized copies are NOT considered official documents. All credentials written in any language other than English must be accompanied by an official English translation in the same format as the originals. Official translations must be original and also be stamped or be certified as accurate by a qualified translator. Student translations are not considered official.
Academic Credentials (Transcripts)
The following academic credentials are required:
- Official credentials (transcripts) from each high school or secondary school attended, with official English translations must be submitted by all freshman and transfer applicants.
- Official credentials (transcripts) from each accredited college, university, professional school, or technical school attended, with official English translations must be submitted by all transfer and postbaccalaureate applicants.
- Transcripts must be received from all schools attended, both in the U.S. and outside the U.S. Transcripts must include all course work completed before the application deadline. The UW requires fall/autumn term grades for all transfer and postbaccalaureate students. If fall term transcripts are not available by the application closing date, submit them as soon as they become available. Late applications will not be accepted, however, so be sure to submit all other required materials by the closing date. Freshmen are not required to submit fall/autumn term grades.
- Students who are still enrolled in secondary school should submit transcripts that include grades/marks received in the 9th, 10th, and 11th years. If the 9th year was completed as part of junior high school in your country, then you must also submit an official transcript from that school.
- Students who have completed secondary school already should submit transcripts that include the final or 12th year of high school. 9th grade transcripts do not need to be submitted if it is not part of your high school record and you have already graduated high school. If you have completed final secondary school exams (HKCEE, O level, etc.), you must submit an official copy of your final exam certificate and/or diploma.
- Students who will not have the official exam certificate for the O-level, HKCEE, or GCSE exams by January 15, 2009, will not be eligible for admission consideration until 2010. Unofficial, preliminary, or predicted exam results will not be accepted.
- International transfer students attending WA state community colleges are encouraged to submit winter quarter grades. Although this is not a requirement, the information may help in the review of your application.
North America
A high school or college transcript is official if it bears the official seal and signature of the issuing institution and is sent directly by the school to the Office of Admissions. You may also mail or deliver transcripts sealed by the school, provided that you do not open the original envelopes.
Other countries
Secondary school credentials must include a list of courses taken and examination marks obtained in at least the last three, or preferably four, years before graduation (equivalent to 9th through 11th grade in the U.S.). Students completing the 9th grade in junior high school must also submit these records unless you have already graduated from secondary school and your final high school record includes grades 10, 11, and 12. If you take final secondary school exams (HKCEE, O level, etc), you must submit the actual, official exam certificate. All credentials should indicate the grade, the amount of time spent on the course, and the general time frame of the academic year in your country. School profiles should be included with the credentials where available. Once submitted, all documents become property of the University and cannot be returned.
