The Admission Decision

The University takes great care in assessing applications and does not rush the selection of future students. While this process requires patience on the part of many applicants, the benefit is that each applicant is reviewed as an individual.

All applicants are notified of the admission decision, whether offered admission or not, in writing. For privacy reasons, we are unable to give out admission decisions over the telephone. Notification is a continuing process so we cannot give a specific date on which you will be notified.

Checking Your Admission Status

A student collects specimens on the banks of a creek.
  • Within a week or two of the receipt of your application and entry of the information in our student data base system, the Office of Admissions will mail a letter confirming that we received your application. That letter will contain private information and instructions, allowing you to set up your own UW NetID and MyUW online account.
  • To set up your UW NetID and MyUW account, you will first need two confidential access codes included in your acknowledgement letter. If you have recently submitted an application, please allow sufficient time for this mail to reach you.
  • If you have already established a UW NetID, you may login now to check the status of your application in your MyUW account. Please note: Information will be available only if your application has already been entered in our student data base system.
  • Online Applicants: Your UW Net ID is NOT the same as the login you used to work on your online application for admission. You won’t be able to create a UW Net ID until you receive a letter from Admissions—by postal mail—which includes instructions and the initial access codes.
  • For security reasons, we can not email you the access code information to set up your UW NetID. All letters will be sent to the mailing address listed on your UW application. Please allow sufficient time for the letter to reach you.

The Notification Timeline

  • International Freshman will be mailed an admission decision between February and April, with most of the decisions being sent in mid-March.
  • International transfer and postbaccalaureate applicants will be notified of the admission decision between May and July, with most of the decisions being mailed in mid-June.
  • All admission decisions are sent via postal mail to the applicant’s mailing address. Depending on where the applicant lives, it may take several weeks for the mail to arrive. Please allow additional time if the address is outside of the U.S.

The May 1 Reply Date for International Freshman Only

May 1 is the date by which all freshman must inform the college of your choice that you will enroll. Rest assured that all international freshman applicants will be notified in plenty of time to consider and finalize a college decision by May 1.

The Waitlist for International Freshman Only

Only applicants who have received a waitlist invitation letter are eligible to be placed on the waitlist. Students can not request to be placed on the waitlist. To accept the invitation to the waitlist, you must complete and return the “Waitlist Response Form” included with the invitation letter by the date indicated on the form. Students on the waitlist are not rank ordered and we can not tell you what your chances may be. If space becomes available for any additional students, decisions will be made at that time and will be based only on the application materials we had on file at the time applications were originally reviewed. Please do not send additional application materials.

We are not likely to know if we will be able to admit applicants from the waitlist before mid to late June. We will send an update to all waitlisted applicants by the end of June. Because we can not guarantee that any space will open up for students on the waitlist, we strongly advise those on the waitlist to confirm their intention to enroll at another college or university for this autumn.
