Tips for International Applicants

Here are some useful tips to keep in mind as you complete your application for admission to the University of Washington!

Read the information and instructions carefully.

Students and visitors discuss a series of presentations.

The Information for International Undergraduates and the application instructions were created to help you through the admission process. It is very important that you read all of the information and instructions so that you can avoid mistakes. “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t read that” are unacceptable reasons for not following the admission process or for not submitting required documents. As the applicant, it is your responsibility to understand the admission information and to ask questions if you do not.

“My friend said…”

Friends or family may not be the most reliable sources of information about UW admission. Read the Information for International Undergraduates and the application instructions for detailed information on admission policies and procedures. If you still have questions, contact the Office of Admissions. Avoid problems later on by getting the correct information now!

Plan ahead!

Be prepared to submit all required documents, such as official transcripts, official English translations, and official English proficiency test scores, before the application deadline. Don’t wait until the last minute to take required tests or submit required documents. Admission to the UW is competitive, and late applications or documents will not be accepted.

Always use your legal name.

International students often use many variations of their name or different names altogether. This can cause confusion and even delays in application processing since we may not realize the differences. Please remember to always use your legal name on all documents (transcripts, test scores, correspondence, etc.) submitted to the UW. Also, when contacting the Office of Admissions by telephone, letter, or email, always include your full legal name and date of birth so that we can easily identify you!

Gather all academic records.

Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from all secondary and postsecondary schools attended, including transcripts from any school outside of the
U.S. If 9th grade was part of junior high school in your country, you will need to submit that transcript as well. Begin gathering all of your academic records early. Do not risk having an incomplete application file by not submitting transcripts from all schools attended.

APPLY!

Once you have read the information for international undergraduates, you should be ready to apply. The application deadline is January 15 for international freshman and February 15 for international transfer and international postbaccalaureates. Don’t wait until the deadline: begin your application now. Set up your online application account or download the PDF application and instructions.

Keep a copy for your records.

The University receives more than 30,000 applications every year. We recommend that you keep a copy of your application, test scores, and academic records for yourself in case you need it later on.

Check your status.

Once your application has been received and processed by the UW, you will be sent information on how to check your application status online. Be sure to verify that your name, address, application quarter, and other information is correct to ensure your application is processed accurately.
