What Is Financial Need?
“Need” is defined as the difference between what it costs a student to attend the UW for one academic year (nine months) and the funds the student and his/her family can be expected to contribute toward those costs. A student’s resources include contributions from:
- parents’ income and assets (calculated by a uniform method mandated by the federal government),
- the student’s income and assets (and spouse’s, if married),
- outside or private scholarships, and
- other sources of financial support.
One in ten freshmen will be the first in their families to attend college.
