Financial Aid

For many students, applying for financial aid is an essential part of getting ready for college. Keep financial aid deadlines in mind, so that you are eligible for the maximum awards for which you qualify. For UW applicants, February 28 is the priority date for filing the FAFSA.

What Is Financial Need?

“Need” is defined as the difference between what it costs a student to attend the UW for one academic year (nine months) and the funds the student and his/her family can be expected to contribute toward those costs. A student’s resources include contributions from:

  • parents’ income and assets (calculated by a uniform method mandated by the federal government),
  • the student’s income and assets (and spouse’s, if married),
  • outside or private scholarships, and
  • other sources of financial support.
