It is your responsibility as the applicant to be aware of all pertinent application requirements. If you have any questions, contact Admissions.
A complete application file consists of:
- Your Application – Completed, signed, and dated
- Application Fee
- The Writing Section
- Personal Statement
- Short Answer
- Activities Log
- Additional Comments
- Official Transcripts (if required)
- Official Scores from SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing
Letters of Recommendation?
Letters of recommendation are neither required nor encouraged. We prefer that you tell us about yourself through the Writing Section of the application. Be thorough, and we’ll know everything we need to know.
Application Fee
The $60 application fee is nonrefundable and must be submitted each time you apply. It cannot be transferred to another quarter, to another campus, or to another student.
Fee Waivers
For students with confirmed financial hardship, the University of Washington provides a waiver of the $60 application fee.
- If you apply online, the fee waiver request is embedded in the application. No additional forms or documents are required.
- If you apply using the PDF or paper version of the application, request a fee waiver by writing a letter of explanation to the Office of Admissions and include documentation showing the need for a fee waiver. Attach the letter and documentation to the rest of your application file.
Receiving a fee waiver will have no bearing whatsoever on the review of your application for admission, nor will the information provided be released to anyone for any purpose.
Mailing Your Application Materials
The Office of Admissions can serve you better – and faster! – if the application, application fee, Personal Statement, and transcripts (sealed by your school) arrive together. Test scores, however, must come separately because they are sent directly from the testing agency to the UW.
Typically, your counselor or school secretary asks you to bring to school your completed application and application fee, which the school then mails with your transcript. If that is not the case at your school, we urge you to include your transcript in a sealed envelope when you mail your application, Personal Statement, and fee, rather than asking your school to mail your transcript separately.
We also recommend that you include your Social Security Number or date of birth on all materials mailed separately from your application, to help Admissions match up your documents.
One in ten freshmen will be the first in their families to attend college.
