Tools for Success

Your Academic Success Plan: These tips will help you survive and thrive at the University of Washington, one of the world's premier universities.

Go to class.

  • Sounds easy, but the temptation to skip class is great.
  • A big part of success in life starts with just showing up, so show up.

Focus, engage.

  • In class: engage.
  • Pay attention.
  • Think about the topic of the day.
  • Focus. Really.
  • It's just 1 or 2 hours. You can do that, can't you?
  • No texting, no email.
  • Just do this one thing.
  • This will save you time, especially getting ready for tests.

Make it small.

  • Sure, the UW is a big place. But you can make it manageable if you try.
  • Talk to your professors and teaching assistants.
  • Go to office hours.
  • Talk to other students. Join a study group, or even a student club.
  • Take control. You can do it.

Take chances.

  • Take some courses just because they will make you smarter.
  • Or because they look interesting.
  • Stretch yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Jump in.

  • Ask questions.
  • Talk to your professors and teaching assistants.
  • Do it your own way: in person or email. Quick question after class, or go to office hours.
  • Make it a habit: formulate one good question for each class each week.
  • It's not enough just to listen to your profs. Think about the material, apply it to your life, ask questions.
  • This is good career training. Potential employers want proactive employees.
